on faith.

Romans 14:23b "whatever does not proceed from faith is sin."
1 Corinthians 2:5 "that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God."
2 Corinthians 5:7 "for we walk by faith, not by sight."

Sometimes, i wish there was a way to walk through life without the possibility of hurt. But maybe i don't believe enough in His Sovereignty and power. The life of faith we live isn't one of blind trusting, but is built upon a solid rock. And maybe i just need to trust that should the wind beat upon the beams of the house, should the rains fall and the floods come, there is an unshakable Foundation which will always be my strength and salvation.

Yah... I've been thinking a bit about what "trust" means, and what "trusting God in faith" is supposed to look like. In preparation for my talk, I've been thinking about the phrase "consider/count yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus." I think for far too long it's been taken to mean a static, intellectual assent to a "spiritual truth".

I'm starting to believe that one key way it's lived out in our 21st century lives is to recognize that our body, our mind, and our culture often lies to us. And being able to identify those lies and considering ourselves dead to those old ways or options of thinking (aka. rejecting them) is a key step to living by faith. Which is hard, because our body and our emotions can be very deceptive and convincing, even to the mind trained in "spiritual truths".

What do you think?
